Matheus Cunha Says Brazil’s Problems Can’t Be Solved in Just Two Training Sessions

Brazil suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Argentina in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The match, which ended 1-4, was played at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (26/3).

Brazil could only respond with a goal from Matheus Cunha in the 26th minute. The goal was the result of a mistake by Argentina defender Cristian Romero. Meanwhile, the home side scored four goals through Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Giuliano Simeone.

Speaking after the defeat, Matheus Cunha admitted that the Brazilians have problems that cannot be solved in a short space of time. “We have to be humble enough to understand the process and know that we cannot solve all the team’s problems in two days of training,” he said after the match, as quoted by ESPN on Wednesday (26 March).

According to him, Brazilian players are finding it difficult to play at the level they did at their respective clubs. “There is no doubt that this is a collective problem. We want to show in the Brazilian national team what we have shown in our clubs, but we have to know the process, we have to know that we did not achieve it overnight in the clubs and we will not achieve it overnight in the Brazilian national team,” said Cunha.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers striker wants the Brazilians to improve their skills and be more focused in their next game. “We have the humility to acknowledge the greatness of the Brazilian team, but we also know that we need to improve. Rest assured, as far as it depends on us here, we will be very focused on representing this team,” said Cunha.

After the defeat to Argentina, Brazil will be looking to bounce back with positive results against Ecuador and Paraguay in June. “We are very disappointed with the results, but there is only one way forward and that is to understand the opportunities and take advantage of them. As far as we are concerned, we will never lack the commitment to wear this shirt,” concluded the 25-year-old.

Matheus Cunha was Brazil coach Dorival Junior’s first choice for this match. According to Fotmob, he was able to play effectively, taking just one shot that resulted in a goal.

His goal against Argentina was his debut after 13 appearances for Brazil. Cunha made his debut for Tite’s side against Chile in 2021.
