Despite a strong start to the season, Matthijs de Ligt, the Manchester United centre-back, has not played a game in 2026.

He was an important part of Ruben Amorim’s defensive setup at Old Trafford, but his unexpected absence on December 4, 2025, against West Ham United raised concerns.

Though Amorim downplayed fears of a severe injury, describing it as a “small thing,” de Ligt has not returned to play under the Portuguese manager.

The former Netherlands international injured his back and has faced multiple setbacks during his recovery.

With uncertainty surrounding his return date, caretaker manager Michael Carrick has provided limited updates.

In his pre-match remarks ahead of Manchester United’s match against Bournemouth, Carrick discussed de Ligt’s situation.

When asked about de Ligt’s rehabilitation, Carrick mentioned it remains at a similar stage and acknowledged the defender’s frustration.

He added that it’s challenging to predict a return, stating: “With backs, sometimes you think it’s alright, and then it’s not quite right.”

He further noted, “We’re just being patient and working through it. We’ll give him time and try to get him back as quickly as we can, but it’s really difficult to say.”

With Lisandro Martinez also unavailable, United is hoping for a swift recovery for Matthijs de Ligt, relying on Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro to strengthen the defense in recent matches.
