Matvey Safonov, 26, is struggling with his position on the bench at Paris Saint-Germain. His teammate, Lucas Chevalier, hasn’t been making a significant impact, yet Safonov remains without any playing time this season. He had hoped to gain some minutes through the Russian national team. Earlier this week, Russia’s goalkeeping coach confirmed that Safonov is still viewed as the number one keeper.
Safonov was in goal during a friendly match against Peru and played the entire game. However, the Russian Football Union released a statement announcing that he will not participate in the upcoming friendly against Chile on Saturday at 4 PM (IST). He did not travel to Sochi with his 27 teammates for this match. This news was also confirmed by Russia’s coach, Valery Karpin, who stated that the goalkeeper will return to PSG.
