Scott McTominay has defended the environment at Manchester United, stating that it’s ‘too easy’ to claim players improve after leaving the club.
Since moving from Manchester United to Napoli in 2024, McTominay has flourished in his career. The 29-year-old was transferred for £25 million and had a standout season, winning Serie A’s Most Valuable Player award while helping Napoli secure the Scudetto. He was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
Among others like Antony and Marcus Rashford, McTominay noted that some players seem to thrive after departing, but he quickly expressed support for Manchester United. He insists that the club provides a solid setup for success.
In an interview with CBS Sports, McTominay responded to inquiries about the trend of players succeeding after leaving United, calling it a ‘myth.’

“I disagree. It’s too easy of an excuse,” he remarked. “They helped me with everything during my time there—tactically, in training, nutrition—everything is available for success.”
“It’s not like they lack resources compared to other clubs; that’s a myth,” he added. “The intense focus on the players makes it seem worse than it is. In my final year, I did well, scoring 10 goals and winning a trophy.”
