Lionel Messi has added another significant record to his football career. He is now the player with the most assists in the history of men’s international football. Messi moved past Neymar and Landon Donovan, who were previously tied with him at 58 assists.
He achieved this new record during Argentina’s impressive 6-0 win over Puerto Rico, where he set up two goals. With these, Messi’s total number of assists on the international stage has reached 60.
Argentina, ranked third in the FIFA standings, ended their US tour on a high note. The match took place at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, the home ground for Inter Miami.
While Messi did not get on the scoresheet himself, his key passes that led to goals for Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martinez were standout moments of the game.
Messi’s career as a playmaker for his country has now lasted for over 19 years, with his very first assist coming in his World Cup debut match. He is also nearing another major milestone, as he is now only three assists away from reaching 400 in his entire professional career.
