Manchester United has chosen their short-term manager for the remainder of the Premier League season, bringing Michael Carrick back to Old Trafford.

The club considered both Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as possible replacements for Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed last week.

In the meantime, Darren Fletcher managed the first team, securing a draw against relegation-threatened Burnley and facing an FA Cup loss to Brighton.

Carrick has been named the manager, ahead of Solskjaer, and will lead the team into the upcoming Manchester Derby.

While Solskjaer aimed for a long-term role, Carrick is focused on this temporary position. His goal is to help the team secure a top-five finish for European competition.

Manchester United confirmed on their official website: “Manchester United is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team until the end of the 2025/26 season.”

“Carrick played 464 matches for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.”

“He joined the first-team coaching staff after retiring in 2018, working under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After Solskjaer’s exit, Carrick managed the team effectively as caretaker manager.”

“The former England international was head coach at Middlesbrough for two-and-a-half years starting in October 2022.”
