Minnesota United has promoted Cameron Knowles to head coach, replacing Eric Ramsay, who is leaving the team.
Knowles is an experienced member of the coaching staff, having briefly served as interim coach before Ramsay arrived in March 2024.
Ramsay took on the head coach role at West Bromwich Albion in England’s Championship on Sunday. Under his leadership, Minnesota reached the MLS Cup quarterfinals in both 2024 and 2025.
As interim coach in 2024, Knowles achieved two wins and one draw in three matches.
“Cameron is the right leader for this moment in our club’s journey,” said Khaled El-Ahmad, Minnesota’s chief soccer officer and sporting director. “He has grown with this organization, understands our players, our culture, and our standards, and has shown the ability to develop talent and build strong teams. We believe in Cameron, our squad, and the future we are creating together.”
Knowles, 43, is from New Zealand and joined Minnesota in 2021 as a video analyst before coaching MNUFC2, the club’s reserve team.
He has nine years of coaching experience with the Portland Timbers and played professionally for eight years as a defender with teams including Chicago Fire Premier, Real Salt Lake, Portland, and the Montreal Impact. He played college soccer at Akron.
“I want to thank (Minnesota owner Bill) McGuire, (CEO) Shari Ballard, and Khaled El-Ahmad for this amazing opportunity to lead this team,” Knowles said. “Minnesota United is a fantastic organization with a strong group of players and a loyal fan base. I aim to build on the club’s past successes.”
