Major League Soccer announced the format for the 2027 “sprint season,” which will lead to a summer-to-spring schedule starting later that year.
During the 14-match regular season from February to April 2027, teams will only play against opponents in their own conference, with seven home games and seven away games.
The top eight teams from each conference will enter a single-elimination playoff leading to the MLS Cup final in May.
More details about the schedule will be shared in the coming months.
The results of this short season will determine which MLS teams qualify for the 2028 CONCACAF Champions Cup and Leagues Cup.
From the summer of 2027, MLS plans to have full seasons running from July to the following May, aligning with the European calendar.
Currently, teams compete in 34 regular season matches from February to November, with a break included this year for the FIFA World Cup.
The defending MLS Cup champion, Inter Miami, finished last season with a 19-7-8 record (65 points) and won the final against the Vancouver Whitecaps, 3-1.
