After securing a playoff spot, Inter Miami experienced difficulties, struggling with back-to-back winless games, including a recent defeat against the Chicago Fire. Javier Mascherano’s team has had defensive issues, keeping just two clean sheets in their last six matches. Adding to their troubles, another player associated with Lionel Messi has received an MLS fine, marking the second straight instance of an Inter Miami player being penalized for similar reasons.

Jose Armando Rodriguez reports that Sergio Busquets has been punished for simulating a foul in Inter Miami’s match against the Chicago Fire. This sanction likely involves a fine, but Busquets will be eligible to play in future games. Previously, Rodrigo De Paul received a similar sanction, highlighting a curious trend for the team.

Given his availability, head coach Javier Mascherano is expected to include him in the lineup for the next match against the New England Revolution as he aims for a comeback after recent disappointing results. The team practised with a full squad in their last training session, renewing hopes for improved performance.

At 37, Sergio Busquets has been a key player for Inter Miami, starting in 30 of 31 games this season. The upcoming match against the Revolution carries special significance, as the team will pay tribute to the legendary Spanish midfielder following his retirement announcement. This tribute highlights his impact on and off the field during his time in MLS.

What’s next for Inter Miami before their 2025 MLS Playoff debut?

Even though Inter Miami has secured a spot in the 2025 MLS Playoffs, their upcoming matches are critical for maintaining momentum. Recent poor performances highlight the need to return to winning form and ensure they’re ready for the playoffs. Consequently, head coach Javier Mascherano may rely heavily on his top players in the final three regular-season games to ensure they perform at their best when it matters most.

To break their negative streak, the Herons face a busy schedule. They will host the New England Revolution on October 4, take a week off, and then play against Atlanta United at home on October 11. The regular season will conclude with a vital away match against Nashville SC on October 18.
