During the opening match of the 15th round of Ligue 1, the focus shifted from Brest and Monaco to the draw for the 2026 World Cup. Despite this distraction, the game was noteworthy: Brest maintained their strong form with a 1-0 victory, while Monaco continued to struggle after their recent win against PSG. Additionally, Paul Pogba played for over twenty minutes for the first time this season.

Ligue 1 McDonald’s Standings

Coach Sébastien Pocognoli likely expressed frustration at his team’s performance during the first half, which could have seen a larger scoreline in favor of Brest. Labeau-Lascary initiated a chance from 25 meters, but Hradecky made a good save to narrow the angle (20′). Lala nearly scored an improbable goal thanks to the Breton wind (27′), but Kamory Doumbia eventually headed in the winner (28′). Ajorque won a duel following a long throw-in, allowing Doumbia to score.

Pogba played over 20 minutes

Monaco was more noted for their missed opportunities than any standout performances, with Biereth notably squandering a clear chance by shooting over the goal while alone in the box. Guindo struck the crossbar from a free kick early in the second half (54′), yet Brest’s solid teamwork was overshadowed by Ludovic Ajorque’s expulsion.

In a twist of officiating irony, Ajorque was sent off (justly) for a poor tackle on Lamine Camara, who had narrowly avoided a red card for a similarly reckless challenge on Chevalier days before. As tensions rose near Coudert’s goal, Chardonnet was resolute. Pogba showcased his footwork with accurate passes, but his forwards, including young Paris Brunner, struggled to break through a determined Brest side. This victory was crucial for Éric Roy’s men, now positioned 9th in the league, while Monaco’s disappointing performance keeps them in 7th place.
