The second-leg semifinals of the MTN8 Cup will be held in South Africa on Saturday, August 23. In the initial match, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates ended in a draw, with the outcome decided by penalties. Orlando Pirates’ goalkeeper, Sifo Chaine, had an outstanding performance, saving two penalties and leading his team to their fourth consecutive final.
In the second match, Sekhukhune could not overcome Stellenbosch, setting up a repeat of last year’s final.
About the Tournament
MTN8 is a South African football cup competition that began in 1972. It features the top eight teams from the league standings. Since 2002, the event has been named after its title sponsor.
Kaizer Chiefs holds the record for the most titles in tournament history, boasting 15 championships, though they are not competing this season.
Orlando Pirates are the current champions, having won the last three MTN8 titles, bringing their total to 13.
Tournament Format
The tournament includes eight teams, starting from the quarterfinals, moving through the semifinals, and culminating in the final. The semifinals are unique as they are played over two legs; all other matches are single elimination.
The matchups are based on league standings, with the first-place team playing the eighth, the second facing the seventh, the third against the sixth, and the fourth meeting the fifth.
