River Plate held its annual Fundación River dinner, featuring midfielder Ignacio Fernández as one of the key speakers. Fernández, 35, was the first player to arrive and spoke openly about the team’s upcoming matches, River’s current form, and his future as his contract ends in December.

He acknowledged the challenging matches ahead, including the Copa Argentina quarterfinal against Racing. Despite the club’s difficulties in the domestic league, Fernández noted that River often performs well in international competitions. He referred to Palmeiras, River’s rival in the Copa Libertadores, as a strong team, highlighting their significant investments in transfers and River’s familiarity with them. “It will be a tough series,” he stated.

On a personal note, Fernández discussed his contract, which expires on December 31. He focused on finishing the year strong but mentioned that he would evaluate his future with his family after the season. “Being here is a privilege, and at the end of the year we’ll decide what’s best,” he said, hinting at the possibility of moving on.

Fernández agreed with Marcelo Gallardo’s view that the team needs to improve its play in the final third, even with good results in the domestic league, Libertadores, and Copa Argentina. “This club always demands more, and we are working toward that,” he added.

Personally, Fernández expressed his desire to keep competing. He emphasized the importance of experienced players in mentoring younger teammates but noted that he competes for his position like anyone else. While he acknowledged the challenge of sitting out, he trained hard to be ready whenever needed. He also praised goalkeeper Franco Armani for his crucial performances in penalty shootouts.

As River competes in three tournaments, Fernández’s comments showcased his role as both a leader and a competitor, highlighting the importance of experience and ambition in the squad.
