Nacional’s unexpected exit from the Copa AUF Uruguay at the hands of Plaza Colonia has raised questions about head coach Pablo Peirano’s future, reports El País. After leading 1-0 at Gran Parque Central, Nacional lost 2-1, allowing Plaza Colonia to advance to the quarterfinals.
Club vice president Flavio Perchman spoke on Carve Deportiva, indicating that no immediate decision will be made regarding Peirano. “This isn’t just another match result. We will stay calm heading into Sunday. We’ve changed coaches numerous times, and it hasn’t helped. We’re not making any hasty moves right now,” he stated.
Perchman acknowledged that the recent loss could affect attendance at the upcoming league match at Estadio Centenario but pointed out that a victory, along with Peñarol dropping points, could shift opinions quickly. He recognized that most of the criticism is aimed at the coach but opposed what he described as a “permanent witch hunt” against Peirano.
The official also expressed worries about officiating. While he believed refereeing has generally been good, he mentioned specific incidents, like a shove in the clásico, that should have been checked. He noted the difference between Peñarol’s proactive media strategy and Nacional’s quieter stance.
As discussions continue following their cup elimination, Nacional is now focused on improving its league performance amid increasing scrutiny.
