In the past year, Kobbie Mainoo has gone from being a regular starter at Old Trafford to mostly sitting on the bench for Manchester United.

Under Erik ten Hag, he received call-ups for England’s Euro 2024 team, earned nominations for the Golden Boy award, and played a key role in their FA Cup victory in 2023.

However, since Ruben Amorim joined the club, Mainoo has found it difficult to get playing time. This has also led him to lose his place in the England squad and become increasingly frustrated.

This season is even tougher for the 20-year-old as he is now facing competition from team captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting position.

As a result, Mainoo requested a loan move during the summer, which was turned down. Now, a potential winter transfer is being discussed.

Napoli was seen as a leading candidate for his loan, hoping to reunite him with former teammates Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund in January.

However, according to Sky Sports and Area Napoli, Napoli is no longer interested in Mainoo.

Sky Sports journalist Luca Marchetti stated: “Unfortunately, the timing isn’t right for Kobbie Mainoo to move to Italy before January, which Napoli had hoped for.”

He added, “Niclas Fullkrug is already in Italy to sign for AC Milan, and Mainoo’s situation should have been settled before Christmas.”

“Manchester United wouldn’t agree, and Napoli’s interest has not reached a conclusion.”

As a result, a transfer for Mainoo seems unlikely, with United opting to retain him despite his limited playtime.

Currently, the former England international is dealing with a calf injury, keeping him off the field.

However, if he can regain his fitness before Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo may still have a chance to prove himself under Ruben Amorim.
