Nemanja Matic Shines Brightly at Sassuolo, Showcasing His Exceptional Skills and Experience.

Nemanja Matić made an impact at Lyon. Following a notable career in England, the defensive midfielder joined the club in winter 2023. After struggling at Rennes for six months, the former Chelsea player was eager to sign with OL, despite their fight against relegation. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and enjoyed a successful stint at the Groupama Stadium. Under coach Pierre Sage, Matić played a key role in the team’s rise in the Ligue 1 standings alongside Alexandre Lacazette.

His first full season with Lyon turned out to be less impressive. Although still important under Sage, Matić struggled after the coach’s departure in December and lost his essential status under Paulo Fonseca. As he aged, it became harder for him to perform consistently, and his form declined. Following a mixed season, Matić’s relationship with the coach deteriorated when Fonseca favored Paul Akouokou for the quarter-finals of the Europa League against Manchester United. Due to the club’s financial troubles last summer, Matić was released from his final contract year, primarily due to his high salary. After months of interest from Italy, he decided to join Sassuolo as a free agent.

Nemanja Matić’s Second Wind at Sassuolo

Signing a one-year contract with the Neroverdi, the Sabac native sought to enjoy football again in Italy, two years after leaving AS Roma. It’s clear that the Italian atmosphere suits the former Manchester United player. Under Fabio Grosso, whom he nearly met in Lyon, Matić has become indispensable. He has started every match, missing only eight minutes in Serie A this season, showcasing impressive reliability at his age. His technical skills have significantly contributed to Sassuolo’s strong start this season.

As captain in two matches this season, Matić has delighted both fans and teammates. In a press conference, coach Fabio Grosso praised him: “Nemanja Matić? You keep asking me, and my answer remains the same: he is a top-level player. His career speaks for itself. He has adapted perfectly to our reality. I’m very pleased with what he brings to the team and proud of him as a person.” Staying out of the media spotlight, Matić continues to prove on the pitch that even at 37, he remains one of the best in his position in Serie A.
