Streaming service Netflix is looking to secure the rights to show Champions League matches.
Details: The Times reports that Netflix is preparing an official bid, which might turn out to be one of the most costly in sports broadcasting history.
This opportunity arises from new UEFA rules that permit streaming services to apply for broadcasting rights across multiple countries at once, instead of applying for each country individually. Under these new guidelines, a single platform that acquires the global package can stream Champions League matches worldwide.
UEFA expects to generate about £4.4 billion annually from selling TV rights for club competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
Netflix is considering the option to secure rights to broadcast just one Champions League match per round.
