Defending champions Newcastle United have advanced to the League Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at their home ground. While Tottenham dominated possession throughout the match, they were unable to find a way past the Newcastle defense. Goals in each half of the game secured the win for the visitors.
Fabian Schär put Newcastle ahead in the 24th minute of the first half, scoring with a header from a Sandro Tonali cross. Nick Woltemade then sealed the victory just five minutes into the second half. The German forward also scored with a header, converting a cross from Joe Willock.
