Anthony Gordon Apologizes for His Red Card in Match Against Liverpool

Newcastle United striker Anthony Gordon has apologized to both his teammates and fans after his red card during the 3-2 loss to Liverpool at St James’ Park on Monday.

Gordon received his red card in first-half stoppage time for a reckless tackle that left marks on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk’s calf. Referee Simon Hooper upgraded his initial yellow card to red.

Even with 10 players, Newcastle managed to come back from a two-goal deficit, but Liverpool’s 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha scored the winning goal in the 100th minute.

“I sincerely apologize to my teammates and the fans. I just wanted to energize the game but mistimed my tackle,” Gordon shared on social media.

The 24-year-old England international also expressed regret to Van Dijk, stating, “I would never intentionally tackle anyone like that. We talked after the match, and he understands.”

Newcastle is set to face Leeds United on Saturday.
