The Nigerian Football Federation has confirmed that FIFA has not yet settled the issue involving midfielder Teboho Mokoena, leaving the South African national team in a tense situation. This controversy came back to light after Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria, which allowed them to keep their lead in the qualification group.
As reported by Nigerian Eye, the matter is still pending, and South Africa could face a possible three-point deduction. This issue started in March of last year when Mokoena played in a match against Lesotho despite being suspended. Due to a technical error, South Africa’s points were at risk, but Lesotho did not lodge a protest on time.
With two rounds left in the qualifiers, Bafana Bafana hold the top position, leading Benin and Nigeria by three and six points respectively. Hugo Broos’s team will play against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in their final matches.
