Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has joined the German national team, putting an end to Nigeria’s hopes of having him switch to the Super Eagles.

The German Football Association announced his selection on Monday as a precaution, due to uncertainties around Oliver Baumann’s availability for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

Atubolu, born in Germany to Nigerian parents, has played at every youth level for Germany. His recent call-up to the senior team makes it highly unlikely that he will ever represent Nigeria, as even a brief appearance for Germany would tie him to the national side.

“I’m going to the national team with the hope of absorbing everything and learning. It’s a great honour for me to be on the German national team,” Atubolu stated.

His decision is a significant setback for Nigeria’s goalkeeping prospects. Known for his quick reflexes and ability to play out from the back, he was seen as a strong contender to challenge Stanley Nwabali for the Super Eagles’ No. 1 position.

With Maduka Okoye out of form and Nwabali nearing 30, Atubolu’s potential could have bolstered Nigeria’s goalkeeping options for years. However, his commitment to Germany now permanently closes that possibility.
