Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele were notable forwards last season and have emerged as candidates for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. However, Liverpool legend Michael Owen, who won the award in 2001, does not consider either of them to be the world’s best forward right now.

The former striker, who also played for Real Madrid and Manchester United, identifies Kylian Mbappe as the top forward currently.

For me, he’s the best in the world,” Owen said on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast. “There are effective center-forwards like Kane, Lewandowski, or Haaland who will always score goals, but in the biggest matches, under pressure, Mbappe can take over a game.

Owen pointed out what makes Mbappe different from other great scorers. “If you’re a center-back, you don’t worry about facing Kane, Lewandowski, or Haaland. They won’t beat you with skill or speed. But Mbappe can embarrass you. His touch is excellent, he’s incredibly fast, and he can finish. He can dominate matches. When someone can shine through skill, that makes him the best,” he added.

Owen explains why Mbappe adjusted quickly to Real Madrid

Mbappe responded well to early criticism during his first season at Real Madrid, finishing with 41 goals in all competitions. He aims to do even better in his second year.

Owen was not surprised by Mbappe’s quick adjustment. “It didn’t shock me—he’s just that good,” he said, reflecting on his season with Real Madrid in 2004–05. “He’s scored hat tricks in World Cups, and he’s always been brilliant.”

Owen also noted that Real Madrid’s playing style makes it easier for top attackers. “I’ve experienced it. It’s not hard to adapt when you’re on a team that dominates possession in almost every game,” he explained. “With great players around you, in a fantastic stadium, and the expectation to win, it’s nearly impossible not to score goals at Real Madrid.”
