Darwin Núñez arrived in Montevideo on Sunday to join Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay team for the final World Cup qualifier against Chile, as reported by FútbolUy. The striker is serving his last suspension for the incident against Peru and comes back amid discussions about his transfer from the Premier League to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

At Carrasco Airport, Núñez spoke to the media, downplaying the controversy surrounding his move: “I’m very happy with this new experience in a growing league. I needed playing time, especially with the World Cup coming up. I wanted minutes, which I wasn’t getting at Liverpool,” he said, noting the tough decision involved input from those close to him.

When asked about Bielsa’s views, he laughed, saying, “I haven’t spoken to him yet. I’ll see him today. I’m not sure what he’ll say; maybe he’ll scold me. I hope it’s something positive.” He mentioned he prefers to stay away from press conferences and social media, believing they can be harmful to players.

Regarding his goal-scoring drought, Núñez expressed patience: “Things will come at the right time. I’m not on a scoring streak, but I’ll keep working. It’s all about patience. I want to give my best at the World Cup.”

He also shared a conversation with Luis Suárez before taking on Uruguay’s number nine shirt. “I told him: ‘I’ll take the nine, but it’s a big responsibility. You’re a legend for Uruguay, and I need to follow your path’.”

Núñez rejoins the national team after completing a five-match suspension from the incidents during the Copa América. “Not being able to play last time was tough; I wanted to be there,” he admitted.
