New York City FC has loaned defender Mitja Ilenic to Polish club Rakow Czestochowa until December 2026.

The 21-year-old Slovenian player scored three goals and provided two assists in 64 MLS matches with NYCFC from 2023 to 2025. During Ilenic’s time with the club, NYCFC was among the top five teams in goals allowed in the Eastern Conference.

“We support Mitja’s wish to return to Europe and appreciate all his contributions to the club,” said sporting director Todd Dunivant in a news release on Saturday. “This move gives us more flexibility with our roster as we prepare for the 2026 season.”

In the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, Ilenic scored the winning penalty in a shootout against FC Cincinnati, helping New York City FC advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

“I want to thank New York City FC for this opportunity and for everything during my time here,” Ilenic said. “I’m grateful to my teammates, coaches, and staff for their support. I’ll always remember my time in New York. I’m excited for this next challenge in Europe and wish the team the best as it heads into the 2026 season.”
