Omar Artan, a Somali referee, recently shared his experience after being turned away upon arrival at Miami airport. On June 8, his situation garnered attention within the football community, especially as he was selected by FIFA to officiate in the upcoming World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Upon his arrival in the United States, Artan faced an 11-hour interrogation before being sent back to Turkey. Speaking in an interview from Istanbul to the New York Times, he expressed frustration over the incident, asserting that he possessed all the necessary documents to enter the country.

“I am really, really disappointed. I am just a referee trying to live his biggest dream, to go to the World Cup. I had the right papers and the right visa. I think they have a problem with my country,” Artan remarked, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals from certain nations.
