Michael Owen has expressed his support for Michael Carrick to become the permanent manager of Manchester United, stating he is surprised by those who oppose this idea.

Carrick has achieved seven wins in his ten matches as interim boss, placing Manchester United in the top three of the Premier League, making them the league’s top-performing team right now.

No final decision about Carrick’s future has been made, but Owen believes his former teammate is the ideal candidate for the position.

He stated that Carrick’s results warrant a long-term chance and he struggles to understand why others suggest otherwise.

“Just think about it: if you let Michael Carrick go and brought in another manager—no matter who it is—what if things went badly again? The ownership would face heavy criticism. I’m really surprised by some people saying he shouldn’t be appointed. Why is this even a question? I don’t understand it,” Owen told Chris Wheeler.

“I’m not saying to give him a ten-year contract, but what more could he do? It seems like this Manchester United team is improving. Why disrupt that?”

“How can anyone argue that he shouldn’t stay? What’s the worst-case scenario? You give him a two-year contract, and if the first few months go poorly, he can leave the club.”

“If the league started when Carrick took over, Manchester United would be at the top right now. Right now, we’d be about a third of the way into the season, and you’d wonder if they could win the league.”
