Oxford United is seeking new players during the winter transfer window as they aim to avoid relegation.

The team is currently in 23rd place in the Championship, above only Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite an 11-point gap to the bottom of the table due to Wednesday’s 18-point deduction, Oxford needs to improve.

They can still move out of the relegation zone, as just six points separate them from 20th place, Blackburn Rovers.

To assist in their efforts, Oxford has turned to the transfer market but has had their initial bid for a former Manchester United midfielder turned down.

According to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, Oxford United made an offer for Reading’s Charlie Savage, which was rejected.

They proposed £500,000, but this did not meet Reading’s valuation of their key midfielder.

If Oxford raises their offer, it’s uncertain if Reading would consider it, as they view him as an important player.

Charlie Savage joined Reading from Manchester United in July 2023 after progressing through the United academy and spending the earlier part of the year on loan at Forest Green.

Since joining Reading, Savage has made 123 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 16 assists.

His contract runs until summer 2027, making this window Reading’s last opportunity to sell the former Wales international.

At this point, it’s unclear whether Oxford will make a new bid for the young midfielder or explore other options.
