Martín Palermo has been appointed as the head coach of Fortaleza, according to the club’s announcement on Wednesday. This will be Palermo’s first coaching role in Brazilian football. His contract runs until December 2025, with an option to extend. He will make his debut on September 13 at Arena Castelão against Vitória in the 23rd round of the Brasileirao.

The former Boca Juniors striker will be joined by a support team that includes assistants Diego Cagna and Cristian Damián Leyes, fitness coaches Gastón Mendoza and Esteban Herrera, and analyst Renato Cornejo. A formal introduction is expected in the coming days at the Alcides Santos training facility.

Marcelo Paz, Fortaleza’s executive director, mentioned that they chose Palermo to revitalize the team. “Palermo understands our current situation and the challenges we face. We need a team that fights for every ball, defends well, wins matches, and collects points,” Paz stated in the club’s release.

Palermo takes over from Renato Paiva, who was in charge for just ten games. Paiva oversaw the team’s elimination from the Copa Libertadores in the round of 16 against Vélez and faced struggles in the league. Fortaleza is currently in 19th place with 15 points, just ahead of Sport Recife (10), and they are seven points away from safety. The upcoming match against Vitória, who are also in the relegation zone with 22 points, could be crucial.

Palermo’s hiring continues the trend of Argentine coaches in the league, with Hernán Crespo at São Paulo, Juan Pablo Vojvoda at Santos, and Jorge Sampaoli, who recently rejoined Atlético Mineiro.

Palermo’s coaching journey has taken him through various countries in South America and beyond, with roles at clubs like Godoy Cruz, Arsenal, Aldosivi, and Platense in Argentina, Unión Española and Curicó Unido in Chile, Pachuca in Mexico, and Olimpia in Paraguay, where he won his only title. Taking on the role in Brazil offers both a challenge and a significant opportunity in one of the most competitive leagues.

Fortaleza hopes Palermo’s leadership will help them navigate a difficult season and move away from relegation threats.
