River Plate will take on a strong opponent in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals as they face Palmeiras at the Monumental, according to La Página Millonaria. The first leg in Buenos Aires is expected to be intense.

Palmeiras finds itself in a tough situation, having been eliminated from the Copa do Brasil by Corinthians and struggling for form in the league. Head coach Abel Ferreira is under pressure from fans. The loss of Richard Ríos and Estêvão, key players in their Club World Cup run, has created holes in midfield and the attack.

Tactically, Ferreira usually sets up the team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but he is known for being flexible. He can switch to a back five when needing to defend a lead, moving a winger to fullback and a fullback to central defense. This adaptability helps Palmeiras adjust to different game situations, but it can also lead to weaknesses.

In attack, the focus is on José “Flaco” López and Vitor Roque, who excel at finding space, linking with midfielders, and scoring effectively. Their quick transitions from defense to attack make them a threat on the counter.

However, there are weaknesses, particularly the space behind the fullbacks, especially Joaquín Piquerez, which is often left open due to forward runs. Defensive transitions are another issue, with midfielders struggling to reorganize and center backs uneasy in open situations.

For River, the strategy is clear: press Palmeiras during their build-up, cut off passing lanes between midfield and attack, use the wings effectively, and stay balanced during turnovers. While Palmeiras is a strong team, their vulnerabilities are apparent, and River’s ability to capitalize on them could be crucial for the semifinal outcome.
