Scholes highlights Ruben Amorim’s mistake at Manchester United
Paul Scholes has compared Ruben Amorim’s time at Manchester United to David Moyes’ brief period in charge, noting a significant error made soon after Amorim took over.
Amorim was let go last week after 14 months with the team. His tenure faced considerable criticism, although the results improved after a difficult first year, which ended with United finishing 15th in the league and losing to Spurs in the Europa League final.
Darren Fletcher filled in for two matches following Amorim’s departure, but Michael Carrick is expected to take over as interim head coach until the season concludes. The club plans to announce a permanent replacement this summer, with several potential candidates already being discussed.
The new manager will have to tackle some issues that arose during Amorim’s time. Scholes pointed out one decision he believes hindered progress from the beginning.

There has been considerable discussion at Old Trafford lately, with fans not only talking about Amorim’s sacking but also considering potential short-term replacements.
While many wanted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to return, Ineos chose Carrick after interviewing several candidates. His experience and approach seemed to align with their needs.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was also in the running for the interim role. He had been part of Ten Hag’s staff and briefly took over after Ten Hag was dismissed.
Van Nistelrooy managed four matches during that period, securing three wins and one draw. However, when Amorim arrived, he brought his own team with him, leaving little opportunity for continuity from the previous staff.
The conversation continued around Van Nistelrooy, who later managed Leicester City but struggled there, leading to relegation and his eventual dismissal. Scholes feels that having someone familiar with English football could have benefited Amorim at United.
Moyes left behind more than just Phelan and Meulensteen. Eric Steele served as goalkeeper coach during Ferguson’s time and even learned Spanish to communicate better with David de Gea before Moyes replaced him with Chris Woods.
What did David Moyes say about Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen?
Scholes’ observation is valid. Moyes acknowledged that his choice to completely change the coaching staff at United in 2013 was one of his biggest regrets, particularly concerning Phelan.
Moyes mentioned that he actually tried to keep Meulensteen as part of his staff.
Speaking to beIN Sports, as reported by The Mirror, Moyes stated: “In hindsight, I should have kept one of the staff that Alex had – which I attempted to do, but it didn’t work out.”
“I offered Rene the job and he decided not to stay. If I knew Rene wasn’t going to stay, I would have been better off keeping Mike.”
“Managers usually bring their entire staff when they move to new clubs, so it wasn’t unusual.”
