Paraguayan media report that Cerro Porteño has found their top choice to replace Diego Martínez. The club’s leaders prefer a coach familiar with Paraguayan football, and Pedro Sarabia is the leading candidate.
Martínez, the Argentine manager, was let go after just nine months due to poor results. The club thanked him and his staff “for their work, commitment, and dedication from day one” in an official statement. Jorge Achucarro will serve as interim coach for the upcoming match against Sportivo Ameliano on Saturday.
Sarabia, a former player for Cerro, has strong connections to the club but has never been a manager there. He currently coaches Nacional, a team in the title race, making negotiations more complicated. “We want a coach who understands Paraguayan football well,” said vice president Miguel Carrizosa, outlining the board’s expectations.
This vacancy comes at a critical point in the season, as Cerro Porteño still hopes to compete for trophies. Swiftly appointing a new head coach is vital for stabilizing the team and maintaining their momentum in the league.
