Peñarol has announced that winger Javier Cabrera has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he sustained during last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Plaza Colonia, according to FútbolUy. Medical tests confirmed the injury’s severity, and Cabrera is set to have surgery soon.

The injury occurred in the 33rd minute at Estadio Campeón del Siglo, leading to his substitution by Matías Arezo while he was in noticeable pain. Head coach Diego Aguirre had suggested that the injury was serious during his comments after the match.

The official announcement stated that Cabrera will be out for the rest of the current Uruguayan season and several months into the next one. His absence is a significant setback, as he had been performing well this season.

This injury is the fourth ACL tear for Peñarol players in 2025, following injuries to Eduardo Darias, Tomás Olase, and Germán Barbas. With another player sidelined for a long time, the club’s management is looking into the free-agent market for possible replacements.

“We have the option to bring in a player without a contract. We’ll act quickly. Aguirre’s mind was already on finding options right after the game,” said sporting director Marcelo Rodríguez.
