Pep Guardiola has shared his insights on former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and current interim coach Michael Carrick.

Manchester City is preparing to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Guardiola won’t see Amorim again.

Amorim was dismissed by Man United last week after just 14 months in the role. He previously managed Sporting CP before joining United.

After Amorim’s exit, Darren Fletcher took over as caretaker manager for two matches. His time ended earlier this week when Michael Carrick was named interim head coach.

Pep Guardiola has commented on Michael Carrick and Ruben Amorim as City prepares for their match at Old Trafford.

Carrick, returning to United after his tenure at Middlesbrough, replaces Amorim, who led the team for just over a year.

When asked if Carrick would abandon Amorim’s back three setup, Guardiola noted, “He used this formation with Middlesbrough. He played over 100 games with the same formation.”

Carrick’s experience at Boro likely granted him another opportunity at United. Given the fans’ discontent with Amorim’s back three, a switch to four at the back is likely under Carrick.

This change might benefit the team, helping to restore some much-needed direction.

While United’s situation is challenging this season—finishing sixth last year and currently sitting seventh—it’s not fair to attribute all their struggles to one system or coach.

Pep Guardiola says Man Utd boss Michael Carrick could make a bold move vs Man City

Guardiola believes the adjustment won’t be difficult for United if Carrick fields the right players.

“It would be easy,” he said. “With the right players in the right positions, it would be straightforward.”

He added, “Players perform best when the team functions well, and they struggle when it doesn’t.”

Both teams will meet at Old Trafford for their last league encounter of the 2025-26 season, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30pm.
