Hugo Ekitike expressed his appreciation for playing alongside Mo Salah, describing him as a “great professional” and a valuable example for Liverpool players following his return to action.

The French striker scored two goals as Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory over Brighton at Anfield on Saturday.

Ekitike made history by scoring the season’s fastest goal just 51 seconds into the match.

Salah, who came on in the 26th minute due to Joe Gomez’s injury, assisted Ekitike’s second goal in his first match since addressing media comments last weekend.

Ekitike highlighted the importance of the win for Liverpool, who are now unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions after challenging times.

He shared with BBC Match of the Day: “We performed well in the Champions League. The last Premier League match against Leeds was tough. We returned to Liverpool with a draw, so it was crucial to win today and maybe start a new chapter. I feel good about today.

“I really enjoy being here. I have wonderful teammates, supportive staff, and great fans who show me love, so I aim to reciprocate by scoring goals and contributing to victories.

“I focus on my role, whether I’m playing with Flo [Wirtz] or Alex [Isak], and strive to complement them.”

Ekitike praised Salah, who returned after being left out of the squad for the 1-0 win against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Salah expressed his dissatisfaction last Saturday about being benched for three consecutive games and mentioned feeling like a scapegoat during a tough period for the team. He also indicated some strain in his relationship with the manager.

After training alone while the team faced Inter Milan, Salah was included in the squad against Brighton following discussions with the manager.

“Mohamed is an outstanding professional,” Ekitike noted. “I look up to him. His contributions in terms of goals and assists are remarkable. He is a club legend. Playing alongside him is a privilege.”
