The United States men’s national soccer team is facing challenges. As noted by Sports Illustrated, the team, led by Mauricio Pochettino, is struggling to achieve results with the 2026 World Cup approaching. Their latest defeat was a 2-0 loss to South Korea at Sports Illustrated Stadium, where Heung-Min Son stood out.

Despite having talented players like Christian Pulisic, Sergiño Dest, and Tyler Adams, the USMNT has had a tough 2025. In 11 matches, they secured four wins, one draw, and suffered six losses. The draw occurred during the Gold Cup quarterfinal against Costa Rica, which they only managed to win through penalties. Their losses included the Nations League semifinal against Panama, a third-place match against Canada, and friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland, along with a Gold Cup final defeat against Mexico and the recent loss to South Korea.

The wins reflect a different narrative. They were achieved against Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, and Guatemala, all in the Gold Cup and all teams outside FIFA’s top ranks. When facing stronger teams, the results have been disappointing. Since Pochettino’s first win against Panama, the Americans have been defeated by Mexico twice, as well as by Panama, Canada, Turkey, Switzerland, and South Korea.

The statistics reveal a significant issue. The USMNT has struggled against higher-ranked opponents, raising doubts about their preparedness for a tournament with high expectations.

Pochettino began his role in October 2024 with ambitions to improve American soccer. He started with promising wins against Jamaica in Nations League play, but the team has since faltered in key matches. The pressure is mounting, and the time for adjustments is running out.

With less than a year until the 2026 World Cup, the United States is surrounded by uncertainty. Pochettino’s approach is being closely examined, and the focus has shifted from long-term development to achieving immediate success against top competition.
