Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has announced a 23-member squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Hungary next month.
An additional spot in the squad has been left open for striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in July in a road accident.
“This is our first training camp without Diogo Jota. We recognize the significance he held for us. We want to honor his memory daily,” Martinez stated.
“His spirit will remain in our hearts. We will play for Diogo, for his brother André, and for all the Portuguese people. Thus, we will have a 23+1 squad.”
Portugal, winners of the UEFA Nations League, will compete against Armenia, Hungary, and the Republic of Ireland in the qualifiers.
The Selecao will face Armenia on September 6 before heading to Budapest to play against Hungary three days later.
