Portugal will take on Denmark in the second leg of the 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League quarter-finals at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The match is scheduled to take place on Monday 24 March 2025 at 01.15 am IST. Portugal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg at the Danish capital. Rasmus Hojlund scored the only goal to secure the win for Denmark in the 78th minute after being teed up by Andreas Skov Olsen. Interestingly, both players had just come off the bench in the 69th minute.
Denmark had the opportunity to take the lead in the first half. However, Christian Eriksen’s penalty was saved by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Despite having more possession, 56% to Denmark’s 44%, Portugal struggled to create any real chances. Denmark attempted more shots, 23, with 9 on target, compared to Portugal’s 8, with 2 on target. All of Pedro Neto’s efforts were off target, while Denmark’s only shot on target found the back of the Portuguese net. Had it not been for Costa’s brilliant performance, Portugal might have suffered an even heavier defeat.
With Costa, Portugal still have a chance to turn things around at home. To do so, they need to improve their defensive solidity, be more creative in creating chances and be sharper in front of goal. The record shows that Portugal have won their last three UEFA Nations League home matches, beating Croatia 2-1, Scotland 2-1 and Poland 5-1.
Denmark, on the other hand, have failed to win in their last four away games in the competition, losing 2-1 to Croatia, 1-0 to Spain, 2-2 to Switzerland and 0-0 to Serbia. Denmark will have to fight hard if they are to maintain their lead over Portugal. If they allow Portugal to find their rhythm again, Denmark could be in trouble.
