Manchester United has a strong tradition of developing young talent.
From legends like George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton to the Class of ’92, the club’s academy has produced many successful players.
Recent talents include Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.
Today, a former teammate of Rashford has made news, showcasing a different career path since their youth days.
Non-league Ramsbottom United announced the signing of defender Macauley Wilson.
Wilson was in the United academy until he was 16 and grew up alongside Rashford.
Though he did not advance at United, he has built a solid career in lower league football.
At 28, he comes to Ramsbottom with experience from clubs like Blackpool, Fylde, and Bury, plus a six-year stint at Bamber Bridge.
During half of his time at Bamber Bridge, he served as captain.
His standout moment was scoring the winning penalty in the 2022/23 playoff semi-final against Gainsborough Trinity.
Ramsbottom manager Steve Wilkes praised his leadership and experience.
“After speaking with him and seeing his enthusiasm, I’m pleased to have him on board,” said Wilkes.
“He’s great in the changing room, which will benefit the younger players in our squad.”
Wilson expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m eager for this new challenge after some time away from football.”
“I’ve had positive discussions with manager Steve, and I know quite a few players here, so I’m looking forward to helping the club aim for promotion.”
Macauley Wilson joins Ramsbottom while the team sits in third place, seven points behind the leaders.
