Aaron Ramsdale acknowledged the home crowd’s support as pivotal for Newcastle’s victory against Manchester United, even after Jacob Ramsey’s red card.
Newcastle secured a thrilling 2-1 win at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, thanks to a last-minute goal from substitute William Osula.
Despite Ramsey receiving a controversial red card for simulation in the first half, the home team managed to clinch the victory. Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe described the decision as ‘really harsh’ and insisted Ramsey was not seeking a penalty.
The Magpies did earn a penalty just moments later when Anthony Gordon was fouled during stoppage time in the first half. Gordon successfully converted the penalty. However, the first half ended dramatically when Casemiro equalized with a header from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick.
Even with one player down, Newcastle defended strongly, and Osula’s stunning late goal proved decisive. The Danish winger made a quick run and struck a precise shot into the far corner.
Ramsdale, who returned to the lineup and made several crucial saves, praised Osula and highlighted the impact of the home fans.
In an interview with TNT Sports, he said: “It was really enjoyable. I’ve had limited chances this year, and I hope today I’ve contributed to our three points. We were determined to be resilient, and with ten men, the crowd made it feel like we had thirteen.”
Discussing Osula’s dramatic goal and the celebrations, he mentioned: “I kept running, almost lost my balance, and saw the net bulge. I did a knee slide on my own.”
“I’m thrilled for William Osula. He has great potential, and he needs to trust himself more, but he delivered tonight and helped us win.”
