The Colorado Rapids announced Matt Wells as their new head coach on Tuesday.
Wells, 37, has been an assistant coach with Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League since April 2023.
He takes over from Chris Armas, who left after the Rapids finished 11th in the MLS Western Conference in 2025.
“We are pleased to welcome Matt to the Colorado Rapids as our next head coach,” said club president Padraig Smith. “Matt has a strong background in the Premier League, with a commitment to player development and a tactical style influenced by some of the top coaches in the game.”
“His experience aligns with our long-term goals for the club, and we look forward to progressing under his leadership.”
This marks the first head coaching position for Wells, who has also worked as an assistant at Fulham FC and AFC Bournemouth in England, as well as Club Brugge in Belgium.
“I want to express my gratitude to the ownership at KSE (Kroenke Sports & Entertainment) for trusting me to lead the club,” Wells stated. “I am very ambitious and have spent the last seven years around elite players and coaches. I am eager to bring my experience and winning mindset to this organization.”
Wells is now the third-youngest manager in MLS, following Minnesota United’s Eric Ramsay (34) and St. Louis City’s Yoann Damet (35).
