Following Real Madrid’s loss to Barcelona in a decisive Spanish Clasico for the 2024-25 LaLiga, all eyes are on Carlo Ancelotti’s future.
Real Madrid fell to Barcelona in an evenftul Spanish Clasico in the final stretch of the 2024-25 LaLiga season. While the result puts Hansi Flick’s team in a great position, it leaves Carlo Ancelotti and company in a tough spot.
With only three games remaining, Barca are seven points clear of their lifelong rivals atop the LaLiga standings. The title appears to be right around the corner, just like Ancelotti’s exit from the Spanish capital.
According to journalist and transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Ancelotti is leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season, with both parties expected to work on their breakup after the Spanish Clasico against Barcelona.
“Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid will part ways with formal exit steps to follow after El Clásico. It’s over,” Romano wrote on May 9th. It’s important to note that the journalist had already reported Ancelotti’s exit months ago.

Ancelotti expected to leave Real Madrid for Brazil
Carletto reportedly has plans in place for his future outside Madrid. The rumors linking Ancelotti to the Brazilian national team appear to be true, with the Italian manager expected to take over the Selecao after leaving Real Madrid.
Romano reports that Ancelotti has a verbal agreement with Brazil to coach the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: “After issues on timing between CBF and Real Madrid, Carlo will proceed with exit steps after El Clásico. The Federation, waiting for Ancelotti to sign.”
If the reports are true, Ancelotti’s second tenure at Real Madrid would have lasted four years. After helping the club win La Decima—the 10th UEFA Champions League title in club history—in his first stint, the Italian went on to win the continental trophy with Los Blancos two more times (2022, 2024).
Ancelotti refused to confirm the reports before the Clasico against Barcelona, but he did make something clear: “I will always love Real Madrid. Real Madrid is a special club and it deserves a special attitude from everyone. Every single day”.
Xabi Alonso seen as No. 1 candidate to replace Ancelotti in Madrid
With Ancelotti reportedly leaving for the Brazilian national team, Real Madrid may already have his replacement in mind. Xabi Alonso, who was part of the squad that won the Champions League under Ancelotti in 2014, is the favorite to take over after confirming his departure from Bayer Leverkusen.
“Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen share an excellent relationship as Xabi Alonso’s exit will happen easily,” Romano reported. “The compensation fee was never gonna be an issue as Leverkusen accepted to let Xabi go to Real Madrid as was his clear desire already one year ago.“
