Xabi Alonso’s Ambitious Project at Bernabeu

This summer, Los Blancos have been aggressive in strengthening their squad under Xabi Alonso. Players like Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono have officially joined, demonstrating the club’s commitment to establishing a long-term foundation.

However, Alonso views the defensive midfield area as a weakness in his squad. For this reason, Wharton has emerged as the next main target.

The 21-year-old English player is considered the ideal candidate to control the tempo of the game from a central position, completing the final piece of the puzzle in Alonso’s grand project.

Transfer Plans Delayed Until 2026

Initially, Alonso wanted to bring Wharton in this summer. However, this would only be possible if Real Madrid made significant sales.

Rodrygo was previously expected to be sold to create financial room, but he is now anticipated to stay, pushing Wharton’s transfer to become more realistic in 2026.

As a result, Los Blancos are expected to activate Wharton’s transfer option again in the summer of 2025, aiming to finalize it a year later.

Tight Competition in the Transfer Market

Real Madrid is not alone in pursuing Wharton’s signature. Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool/”>Liverpool are also reported to be monitoring the young midfielder’s situation. However, the high price set by Crystal Palace remains a significant obstacle.

If Los Blancos are truly ready to invest heavily in the summer of 2026, their chances of securing Wharton could greatly increase while simultaneously blocking their Premier League rivals.
