The partnership between Carlos Alcaraz and coach Juan Carlos Ferrero seemed perfect, especially after a highly successful season. However, it ended unexpectedly with a brief social media post: “Thank you for everything, Juanki!”
There were no hints or rumors leading up to this decision. While Alcaraz expressed a desire to continue, their seven-year collaboration that had significantly benefited both of them came to a sudden stop. How did this ideal relationship dissolve just weeks after a historic season?
Following the split, past tensions between Alcaraz and Ferrero have come into focus. Reports suggest the first signs of conflict may date back over two years. At the start of 2023, Alcaraz could not compete in the Australian Open due to injury and was set to return during the South American Golden Clay swing, which Ferrero typically skipped. His absence during Alcaraz’s comeback didn’t sit well with some in the Alcaraz camp, particularly his father, who felt Ferrero should have been there. While this tension wasn’t publicly acknowledged then, it appears to have raised early concerns.
Despite a successful Golden Swing for Alcaraz, the foundation for this split was laid. Together, they won five more Major titles in eleven events, achieving an impressive 45% success rate, but their relationship was altered.
Public statements from both hinted at differing views on how to approach tennis. Ferrero, known for his discipline, emphasized structure and commitment, while Alcaraz preferred a more relaxed and spontaneous style. This contrast was evident in his Netflix documentary, “My Way,” which showcased his desire to explore life outside tennis and pursue success on his terms.
These differences, initially minor, became more significant over time. Concerns regarding Alcaraz’s off-court activities, such as trips to Ibiza, became points of contention. A critical moment arose after Alcaraz’s early exit at the 2024 US Open when he attended a Formula 1 event against Ferrero’s wishes. The documentary portrayed Ferrero as a leading voice in Alcaraz’s career, but Alcaraz made it clear he prioritized his own choices.
A mental burnout followed, affecting Alcaraz’s performance early in the season. Without his successful run from Monte-Carlo to Tokyo, the split might have occurred sooner. Despite ongoing disagreements and the challenges posed by travel between Murcia and Ferrero’s academy, they had a remarkable 2025 season.
Reports indicate financial issues contributed to the breakup. Some suggest that “unacceptable terms” in a rushed contract offer played a crucial role. Regardless, it seems that if both sides had truly wanted to continue, they could have reached an agreement. Their collaboration turned them into global icons, but now Alcaraz’s camp has stepped away. This was not an amicable separation; Ferrero wished to continue, but Alcaraz chose to move on.
They will likely remain polite if they encounter each other again, but for Alcaraz, this was a necessary step to take. As he stated in his documentary months ago, he chose to do things his way.
