The match between the Argentina and Spain national teams for the Finalissima is highly awaited as we approach the 2026 World Cup. This game will feature the champions of the Copa América and the Euro Cup, and reports suggest a date and location that holds significant meaning for the Albiceleste.

As per Marca, the proposed date is Saturday, March 28, 2026, during the FIFA international window. The venue and date are not finalized yet, but Qatar appears to be the top choice compared to other locations considered recently, such as Miami—where Lionel Messi currently plays—Montevideo, and various Middle Eastern cities.

Sources suggest the Finalissima might be held at Lusail Stadium, which offers good weather at that time and is convenient for players from European clubs, even though Messi would have to travel a long distance from Miami. Marca also mentioned that FIFA president Gianni Infantino holds Qatar in high regard, and the country will host the upcoming U-17 World Cup.

The success of the Finalissima hinges on Spain’s performance in World Cup qualifying. While Argentina has already booked its spot in the 2026 tournament, Spain, currently leading its group, could confirm qualification in the next matches, easing the way for the game’s organization.

How many times has the Finalissima been played?

The event has taken place only three times, twice known as the Copa Artemio Franchi. France won against Uruguay 2-0 in 1985, and in 1993, Argentina beat Denmark 5-4 on penalties after a tie at 1-1.

After almost 30 years, the tournament—now called the Finalissima—returned in 2022, featuring the champions of CONMEBOL and UEFA. Argentina won against Italy, marking its status as the most successful team in the competition.

Potential dates for the Finalissima

The FIFA calendar includes an international window from March 23 to March 31, 2026. A separate window for friendlies will occur from June 1 to June 9, as teams prepare for the World Cup, which will run from June 11 to July 19.

Therefore, organizing the Finalissima in June is not feasible. If the game cannot happen in March, other possible dates after the World Cup range from September 21 to October 6, allowing for four matches with an additional window from November 9 to November 17.
