Report: Lionel Messi may have already decided his future with Inter Miami

Inter Miami wants to win it all this season. After beating LAFC, they have lost just one game in 2025. The team keeps growing stronger, and confidence is high. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi may have already made a decision about his future with the club.

Javier Mascherano’s Inter Miami are having an impressive 2025 season. The team has lost only one game so far. It continues to prove itself as one of the most ambitious projects in MLS. Although they dropped the first leg against Los Angeles FC, they bounced back in the return match. After the game, reports emerged suggesting that Lionel Messi may have already made a decision about his future.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Lionel Messi is very close to finalizing a contract extension with Inter Miami. The new deal would keep him at the club until 2026. This timeline matches the inauguration of Inter Miami’s new stadium. Club owner Jorge Mas spoke about this possibility in a recent interview. “The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision,” stated on FDP Radio Miami.

Even, Jorge Mas addressed the timing of the negotiations with the Argentine star. He explained when the deal could be finalized. I expect that within 60-90 days we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been — and everything we’re doing, is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”

His renewal would be huge news for Inter Miami. Messi remains the team’s most influential player. He recently scored a brace against Los Angeles FC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. His goals led a comeback that highlighted his ongoing impact on the field.

Lionel Messi celebrates his goal against Toronto FC

Lionel Messi is enjoying an outstanding run at Inter Miami. Since his arrival, he has played 48 games. In that span, he has scored 42 goals and delivered 21 assists. As a result, he became the club’s all-time leading scorer. He needed only three seasons to break the record. Messi surpassed both Leonardo Campana and Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 32 and 29 goals respectively. His impact has been immediate and undeniable.

Does Inter Miami have a real sporting project beyond Lionel Messi in MLS?

This season, Javier Mascherano made a clear decision. He plans to stop depending on veterans like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Not because their level dropped, but because he wants to build a sustainable project. For that reason, the club brought in Allen Obando, Tadeo Allende, Fafa Picault, Telasco Segovia, and Maximiliano Falcon.

Several younger players now play a key role in Inter Miami’s success. They help build a more balanced and dynamic squad. Even so, Lionel Messi continues to be the team’s cornerstone. He drives the attack and sets the tone. However, the club is working to reduce its reliance on veteran stars.

Compared to 2023, when Messi arrived and took center stage, Inter Miami looks much more competitive. Besides, they are determined to keep that momentum going throughout the season.
