In the opening round of the Champions League, a tense moment unfolded as Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was sent off at Anfield during his team’s 3–2 loss to Liverpool. His dismissal could prompt disciplinary action from UEFA.
The incident occurred in the closing moments of the game, shortly after Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal. As fans celebrated, Simeone responded to gestures from the crowd, which led to a heated exchange before security intervened. Referee Maurizio Mariani issued a straight red card for “unsporting behavior” in his report.
Simeone later addressed his reaction, saying, “They insult you the whole game and you can’t say anything. It’s not justifiable, but it’s not easy.” UEFA has opened a disciplinary file regarding the incident.
According to James Pearce from The Athletic, Simeone might face at least a one-match ban, likely against Eintracht Frankfurt, along with a financial penalty. Atletico Madrid plans to appeal if the ban extends.
This situation could have broader implications. UEFA is also investigating an allegation that Atletico’s nutritionist David Lagos spat at a fan during the incident. Liverpool may also face repercussions for objects thrown from the stands. A decision from UEFA is expected soon.
Simeone on the incident
After the match, Simeone shared that he endured taunts from the crowd for much of the game. He acknowledged that his response was inappropriate but called on Liverpool to take action against the offending supporter.
“Everyone talks about respect, yet you’re shouted at and insulted for 90 minutes. As a coach, I can’t respond. My reaction wasn’t the right one, but after an entire match of provocation, it’s difficult. The referee told me he understood what happened. I hope Liverpool can address this issue and hold the responsible person accountable,” Simeone said in an interview with Movistar+.
“Verbal abuse throughout the match. Gestures included. And I’m expected to remain calm, to take all of it. Why? Because I’m expected to tolerate it,” he added.
