The New England Revolution signed defender Ethan Kohler from Germany’s SV Werder Bremen, the team announced on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old American will be with the team through the 2028-29 season, with an option for 2029-30.
Kohler, who developed in the San Jose Earthquakes’ academy, has played over 70 professional matches.
“Ethan is a rising talent in the U.S. youth national team, bringing valuable club and international experience,” said Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo. “He is a versatile defender, capable of playing both outside back and center back, which adds depth for the upcoming season. We are excited to have him join us in New England and look forward to his arrival for preseason.”
Kohler was part of the U.S. team that reached the quarterfinals at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile this fall, under the guidance of Revolution head coach Mark Mitrovic.
“He is an exceptional professional and a competitive player who strives to win,” Mitrovic stated. “His strong work ethic and high standards are essential for fostering a winning culture within our team. Kohler’s ability on the ball will help us maintain possession, and he also takes pride in his defensive skills. I am looking forward to having him on the team.”
The Revolution will kick off the 2026 MLS season on February 21 against Nashville SC.
