Rio Ferdinand has raised concerns about whether Manchester United‘s new coach, Michael Carrick, can improve the performance of Manuel Ugarte, noting that the £51 million midfielder has not met expectations since joining the club.

Ferdinand shared these thoughts on his YouTube channel, focusing on Carrick’s immediate challenges after taking over from Ruben Amorim.

The former United player pointed out Ugarte’s minimal impact in midfield as one of the key issues Carrick needs to address.

Rio Ferdinand critiques Manuel Ugarte’s lackluster performance

On his YouTube channel, Ferdinand stated: “I have to say, I’ve been disappointed with Ugarte. When he arrived, everyone said he has the energy, can tackle, and moves well. He was described as the right kind of player we needed.”

“However, that hasn’t shown on the pitch. I haven’t seen him perform as people expected, particularly in tackling and being aggressive,” he added.

“He hasn’t made a significant impact in games that would make me think, ‘this guy could be a strong presence in our midfield.’ He hasn’t displayed that potential,” Ferdinand remarked.

Ferdinand’s insight is important as both a pundit and a former teammate of Carrick, who is familiar with the club’s expectations for midfield players.

His comments imply that Ugarte still has to prove he is a fit for the club’s future as it seeks stability.

Michael Carrick to enhance player performance

Ferdinand continued, “Can Michael Carrick bring out the best in Ugarte? This will be a significant challenge for him: getting more from individual players to improve the overall team.”

“He needs to enhance both team performance and individual player capabilities,” he noted.

“How he tackles this challenge will be a critical factor, as we often see players underperforming or only providing brief moments of excellence,” Ferdinand concluded.

The message was clear: Carrick’s ability to elevate performances and mindset will be crucial in the early days of his management.

With United undergoing another transitional phase, achieving consistency in midfield will be a vital test for his coaching skills.
