After defeating Everton, Arsenal reclaimed the top spot in the league, surpassing Manchester City, who had played earlier that day. However, opinions differed on how Saka viewed this situation.

In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Saka shared his thoughts:

“We’re focused on our job. Last week, we aimed to win here, and we did that today, so we’re back at the top of the table.”

“But we’re not really watching City or the other teams; we know we’re in control now. If we keep winning, we’ll stay there.”

Ferdinand expressed a contrasting opinion. On his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE (28 January), he explained why he disagreed with Saka’s viewpoint.

“I don’t think Saka can truly say ‘we’re in control’ with someone like [Haaland] in the picture. That’s just how it is,” Ferdinand remarked.

The former England defender criticized how Saka portrayed Arsenal’s position in the league.

He added:

“Just minutes before, they were ahead of you in the league. They’ve won four in a row while you’ve been sitting there.”

Rio Ferdinand’s remarks questioned

Ferdinand wasn’t shy with his comments, but what exactly did he expect Saka to say?

He suggested that Saka should have been quieter or recognized that City’s performance meant Arsenal wasn’t truly in control.

However, neither option makes sense. Saka had just helped Arsenal secure a victory that kept them at the top, and his confidence reflected their standing.

At this point in the season, nothing is final. More changes are expected before anyone can confidently claim control.
