Robertson’s Perspective on His Future with Liverpool

Arne Slot has expressed support for Andy Robertson regarding his future at Liverpool and praised the defender’s attitude this season.

Robertson’s contract with Liverpool ends next summer, with no updates on a renewal. He has been essential to the team’s successes since joining from Hull City in 2017, but this season has seen him lose his starting spot to Milos Kerkez.

This season, Robertson has only started four Premier League matches and noted that he wants more playing time after being a regular for so long.

In statements reported by the BBC, Robertson said: “I can think back to the last eight and a half years. Jurgen Klopp left me out for one match and I was frustrated. I’m someone who wants to play.

“I’ve played through injuries and when I’ve been less than fully fit. I always want to be on the field, but now that’s not happening, which is a change.

“My role this season is different, and I find enjoyment in it, but at the end of the day, footballers want to play. If anyone is happy sitting on the bench, they shouldn’t be at any club.”

Slot acknowledged Robertson’s frustration and commended him for how he has managed being sidelined.

“I have to commend him. He shows a lot of maturity, and I understand his perspective,” Slot said in a pre-match conference ahead of the game against Burnley this weekend.

“Every player should feel the same about wanting to play regularly. I appreciate that he finds joy in his current role and recognizes how important he’s been to this club over the years.

“He has played many games, but perhaps not as many as he would like. His attitude and comments to the media show a lot about his character.”
