Spain captain and Manchester City player Rodri has said he might someday play for Real Madrid.
The 29-year-old midfielder shared this during an interview with Radioestadio Noche on Wednesday while on duty with the national team.
Speaking from Spain’s training location, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner responded to rumors about a potential move to his hometown this summer.
Despite having previously spent four years with rivals Atlético Madrid, Rodri stated that he cannot ignore the “best clubs in the world.”
These comments come at a crucial time as Rodri approaches the final eighteen months of his current contract.
His deal at the Etihad Stadium runs until June 2027, and discussions about an extension have not yet taken place.
According to Onda Cero, Rodri feels it’s normal to think about his future as he reaches a key stage in his career.
Real Madrid is reportedly looking for a long-term midfielder following the exits of Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić.
Rodri’s tactical skills make him a strong candidate to lead a revamped midfield in Madrid.
Spain captain Rodri discusses possible Real Madrid future
Rodri’s 2025-26 season has focused on recovery after enduring a serious cruciate ligament injury.
During his time off the field, he worked on mentally and physically preparing himself for the return to competition.
He took a planned break in late 2025 to ensure he was fit for the crucial end of the season.
According to Onda Cero, Rodri now feels he is back in top form just before the Champions League quarter-finals.
His recovery aligns with his new role as captain of the Spanish national team, as he leads La Roja into the 2026 World Cup this summer as one of the favorites.
He praised manager Luis de la Fuente for creating a team that approaches every match as a final.
Interestingly, he also mentioned a potential “double pivot” partnership with Arsenal’s Martín Zubimendi.
Rodri pointed out that Spain won the World Cup using two defensive midfielders, suggesting a tactical change for the summer.
He also denied rumors of any issues with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.
The two were rivals during the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, which Rodri won.
However, he expressed “deep admiration” for the Brazilian’s incredible skill.
If a move to Madrid happens this July, the former rivals could become teammates at Santiago Bernabéu.
For now, Rodri’s main goal is to help Manchester City achieve a historic treble.
